Underneath the Lamplight

Underneath the lamplight, by the garden gate…these words always send shivers down my spine. I can hear Marlene’s husky, haunting voice and that accent so clearly in my head. Because celebrity meant just as much in the 1920’s as it does today, more so perhaps, with the arrival of talking motion pictures, I like to study the movie stars and their biographies, imagining what it was like to be a working girl spending her very valued few pennies at the picture house. I turned up an interesting fact about Marlene Dietrich. Her portrait was placed on a postage stamp in 1997, by the German government, and what a portrait it is!
